Comfort in Cold: The Essentials of Vehicle Heating Systems

Being able to drive in a warm vehicle cabin is a blessing one shouldn't take for granted. Your vehicle's HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system is responsible for heating the cabin in cold climates. A timely HVAC servicing can ensure your vehicle's heating system works properly every winter.

At A&A Tires & Truck Towing, our technicians have years of experience working with vehicle HVAC systems. If you're experiencing problems with the heater in your vehicle or require general maintenance, we're here to help. We can diagnose and resolve the issue with thorough inspection and tests.

How Does the Heating System in Your Vehicle Work?

Your vehicle's HVAC system keeps the cabin warm when temperatures are low. Its heating system works closely with the engine's cooling system, so the engine must be on and at operating temperature.

The heating system's components include the heater core, blower motor, thermostat, antifreeze, heater hoses, and cabin air filter, among others. The coolant from the engine's cooling system essentially helps heat the cabin and produce warm air.

The hot coolant from the engine flows to the heater core, a heat exchanger like the radiator. A blower motor blows air through the heater core, absorbing the heat. This air is then circulated through the vents into the cabin. This warm air can also be used to defrost windows and windscreens when you turn on the defroster.

In vehicles with climate control, the system can automatically manage between the heating system and the air conditioning to achieve the desired temperature. It combines cool and warm air for temperature control. Some models even have dual-zone climate control, where passenger and driver sides can have different temperatures.

At A&A Tires & Truck Towing, our technicians are well-versed in HVAC systems, offering reliable maintenance and heating service.

Common Problems with Heating System

As the heating system is linked with the cooling system, a problem in the latter can cause an issue in the former. Here are the most common issues you may face with your vehicle's heating system.

No Warm Air

If the air from the vents is cold and the vehicle's temperature isn't going up, there's a problem with your vehicle's heating system. The coolant level is likely low, so the heater core isn't getting enough to absorb heat. Air pockets in the system can also cause this.

If the coolant is low, topping up can solve the issue. But if there's an antifreeze leak, our technicians can fix the problem by detecting the cause of the leak.

No Air

If there's little or no air from the vents, there can be several causes. It may be caused by a faulty air conditioning compressor, blower motor, wiring, or burnt-out fuse.

Only an expert technician like the ones at A&A Tires & Truck Towing can diagnose the issue and get to the root cause.

Uneven Air Distribution/Temperature

Actuators are components that work the air inlet door, blend door, and mode door behind the vents. A problem with the actuator is typically caused by uneven air or temperature in the cabin. For instance, one side will blow warm air while the other cool air. It may also be caused by a worn-out evaporator coil if your climate control uses heating and air conditioning systems.

Our experts will conduct a series of checks to rule out all the possible issues, including a bad actuator.

HVAC Maintenance

Maintaining your vehicle's heating system regularly is vital, especially if you only use it during winter.

The primary maintenance related to the heating system is checking/replacing the coolant and cabin air filter.

Over time, the antifreeze can become contaminated, which can cause problems for the engine and the heating system. It may even damage the heating core. We recommend timely flushing and refilling. Similarly, the cabin air filter can get clogged, impacting airflow through the vents.

Our technicians can conduct a detailed inspection of the heating system and carry out necessary maintenance to ensure it works optimally.
